It can be installed or can run from removable storage like a USB drive.ĭownload and install the latest version over at Sourceforge. It runs on any operating system that has a current version of Java installed. Freeplane is also a more robust and superuser alternative to Xmind, Mindmeister, and similar mind mapping software.įreeplane is written in Java using OSGi and Java Swing. It provides you a set of tools for mind mapping (also known as concept mapping or information mapping) and navigating the mapped information.

To save your mind map, simply go to File > Save As and enter the name and select the location where you’d like to save it.Freeplane is a free and open source software application that supports thinking, sharing information, getting things done at work, in school and at home. Click ‘Ok’ to save the changes you’ve made.ġ5. You can also copy, paste, underline, bold and perform other alterations to the text here. You can then select the text and change the font style using the drop down menu. To change the font style, etc, right click and select ‘Edit Long Node…’ in the pop up menu to bring up the text edit box.ġ4. Click ‘Enter’ to save the changes you’ve made.ġ3. To edit a node, simply right click on the node you wish to alter and select ‘Edit Node’. To remove a node, select it and either right click and select ‘Remove Node’ from the pop-up menu, or go to Edit > Remove node.Īlternatively, just click ‘Delete’ on your keyboard. In the example above, all the nodes on Point 2 are considered a ‘branch’. Nodes like this that are all on the same level are called ‘sibling’ nodes. You can add various nodes by simply clicking the ‘Add Child Node’ button more than once, or by clicking ‘Enter’ twice after writing your text. To add a branch onto one of your child nodes, simply select it and again click the ‘New Child Node’ button on the menu bar or pop up menu.ġ0. Once again, click and input your title into the node.ĩ. You can also add a Child node to the center (root node) or any other node by right clicking on it and selecting ‘New Child Node’ from the pop-up menu.Ĩ. Click ‘Enter’ to finish inputting text and then see your first node.ħ. It will automatically add a branch to the center node.Ħ. Child nodes are nodes that branch off of another node.ĥ. Using the menu at the top of the screen, click on the light bulb or ‘New Child Node’ button to add a node to your map.
